Previous Questions & Answers

What is the best way to lose weight?

The healthiest and best  way to lose weight is to follow a lower calorie diet based on the Food Guide Pyramid food patterns and to incorporate daily physical activity into your lifestyle. It is important to make small changes in your diet and lifestyle rather than trying to go on a "crash" diet or "fad" diet. On average, you should aim for losing a pound to two pounds a week. In addition, it is important to pay special attention to portion sizes and make sure you are consuming foods in moderation. Furthermore, successful weight loss involves a permanent lifestyle change; otherwise, you will easily regain the weight that you lost. If you need additional information or would like an individual consultation, ask your primary care physician for a referral to the Eat Right. Live Right program to meet with a registered dietitian.

How much sodium should we consume in a day?

The USDA recommends that healthy individuals keep sodium to no more than 2,300 mg per day, according to the HHS 2010 Dietary Guidelines. The USDA recommends keeping your intake of sodium to no more than 1,500 mg per day if you have high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, are African-American or are more than 51 years old. The recommendation to stay under 1,500 mg sodium per day applies to about half of Americans, according to the HHS guidelines.

How can I set up an appointment for nutrition counseling?

The first step to setting up an appointment is to contact your primary care physician and ask them to fill out an Eat Right. Live Right Referral form. Once completely filled out have them fax it to the Eat Right. Live Right. program. The fax number is written on the referral form.  Once the referral is received we will contact you to set up an appointment. To obtain a referral form please visit the Nutrition Services department page on this website.
