At The Birthplace, we understand the importance of bonding with your new baby in a family atmosphere. Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare is excited to embrace the practice of rooming in, which encourages mothers and babies to share the same room during their stay. This new model of care will give families more time to bond with their new baby and become comfortable in caring for them before returning home.

Rooming in is beneficial for both mother and child, and has been shown to have the following advantages:

  • Allow mothers to sleep more by limiting separation anxiety, helping baby adjust to her sleep routine
  • Increase success rates for breastfeeding because mothers make more milk, more quickly
  • Faster weight gain and less likelihood for jaundice in babies who successfully and routinely are breastfed
  • Help mothers and families discover babies’ cues earlier, often resulting in babies that cry less often and soothe more quickly
  • Families have more quality time with babies because the majority of their care takes place all in one place
  • Families are more confident in the care mother and baby receive because they witness first-hand how nurses and doctors care for their loved ones
  • Babies who spend less time in the nursery are less likely to be exposed to infections.

Overnight Guests

To assist in the care of both mother and baby, one person is allowed to spend the night. With the support of this helper, moms feel more comfortable having baby in her room overnight, helping both to adopt a nightly routine.

Overnight visitors must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Only mothers in a room without a roommate are allowed to have an overnight guest (If a roommate is assigned to the room at a later date, guests will no longer be permitted to stay overnight)
  • Only one visitor may stay overnight and that person must be at least 16 years old
  • Guests will not be provided with meals or shower facilities - please make arrangements to fulfill your needs
  • As a courtesy to our patients and staff, please remain clothed at all times
  • If there is a second bed in the room, please do not sit, sleep or set personal items on it, as these beds must be saved for other new moms.
