PDF versionThe Obstetrical Care (OB) Center at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare wants to ensure the health of every baby. If you have missed a period, it’s important to have a pregnancy test. If the test is positive, getting early prenatal care - within the first three months of your pregnancy - is necessary for you and your baby’s health.
We are here to give you the care you and your baby need, even if you are uninsured and can’t pay for services.
The OB Care Center is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm.
What type of services will I receive at the OB Care Center?
Mothers who come to the OB Care Center are in the hands of a very caring and a capable team, consisting of physicians, registered nurses, a nurse practitioner, secretaries, a social worker, and a financial counselor.
At the OB Care Center, we give you:
- Routine pregnancy medical check-ups, lab work, and access to specialists
- Hospital care during pregnancy and delivery
- Information about pregnancy, labor and delivery
- HIV counseling and testing
- Help in applying for other programs such as WIC and low or no cost health insurance for your children and family
- Full health care for you until at least two months after delivery
- Family planning services
What is PCAP?
As a registered Prenatal Care Assistant Program (PCAP), the OB Care Center can help you get the care you need for you and your baby. PCAP offers complete pregnancy care to women and teens who live in New York State, regardless of your ability to pay.
It’s easy to apply and receive care. Staff at the OB Care Center will review your individual circumstances and enroll you for services so you and your baby will get the medical attention you deserve. Additionally, a financial counselor is available to advise you on financial eligibility guidelines and how they affect you. Even if you have a job or have been denied Medicaid, you may still qualify for PCAP.
Who can receive PCAP services?
Women and teens living in New York State who are pregnant and meet certain income guidelines can receive complete medical care during pregnancy, delivery and for at least two months after delivery. You may be eligible even if you have health insurance.
What services does PCAP provide?
- Prenatal vitamins
- Regular medical checkups throughout your pregnancy and after delivery
- Hospital care for delivery, emergency evaluation and 24-hour care
- Diagnostic testing as required, including voluntary HIV testing and counseling
- Education on childbirth, baby care, infant growth and development, and parenting skills
- Counseling and instructions on your pregnancy, nutrition, delivery and special services
- Home health care visits, social services, educational programs, contraceptive counseling, language interpretation and support groups

Medical bus passes provided by Centro Bus Lines
During the last 10 days of every month, bus passes can be obtained at the Centro Bus Lines main office at the Radisson Hotel on Genesee Street in Downtown Utica.
Where will I deliver my baby?
Your baby will be delivered at The Birthplace at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare. Approximately 2,000 babies are born every year at The Birthplace. You will be in the same room during your labor, delivery and recovery. Following your recovery, you will be cared for in the post-partum unit for the rest of your stay.
How is my bill paid?
Once you’ve applied for and been accepted through PCAP’s or Medicaid’s managed care programs, all costs associated with lab work, office visits, sonograms and your delivery will be covered.
What do I do in case of an emergency during my pregnancy?
If you have any problems during your pregnancy, please call us. Even if it’s after hours or over the weekend, our phones are answered by the staff at The Birthplace. A real person - a qualified professional - will be there to answer your questions and give you guidance.
